Big Ange with Tottenham, What they succeed and their weakness

 

In preparation for the 2023/2024 season, 

Ange Postecoglou (hereafter referred to as "Postecoglou") was appointed as the head coach of Tottenham.

In the previous season, under the leadership of Antonio Conte, 

Tottenham displayed poor performances and results, leading to Conte's mid-season dismissal. 

The season was then concluded under the interim management of Stellini and Mason, resulting in an 8th-place finish in the league. 

For the first time in several years, Tottenham failed to qualify for European competitions.

To make matters worse, Harry Kane, the best product of Tottenham's youth system since the 2010s and their leading striker, transferred to Munich. 

There are very few strikers worldwide who can replace Harry Kane, making this a significant blow to Tottenham.

 

In this situation, Tottenham sought to establish a new foundation by appointing Postecoglou, who had led Celtic to victory in the Scottish Premiership.

As the 23/24 season nears its end, this choice seems to be close to a "success." Tottenham currently sits in 5th place, higher than last season, and their gameplay has notably improved compared to the previous season.

 

Under previous managers like Conte, Nuno, and Mourinho, Tottenham's matches were honestly not very exciting.

Although these managers, especially Conte and Mourinho, are renowned for knowing how to win and achieve titles, they did not make the matches entertaining.

Moreover, they failed to deliver the long-desired title for Tottenham, missing out on both excitement and victory.

At least Postecoglou has brought back the excitement. 

Tottenham fans have missed the dynamic attacking football from the Pochettino era, and Postecoglou has somewhat revived that style at Tottenham.

A key change in the front line is the signing of James Maddison. 

 

Since the departure of Christian Eriksen, who was known for his creativity and striking ability, Tottenham had struggled to fill that gap. 

Attempts were made with Dele Alli and Giovanni Lo Celso, but neither fulfilled expectations. 

Even using Harry Kane as an all-rounder wasn't sufficient. 

 

However, Maddison has managed to fill that void.

With James Maddison, who was pivotal in Leicester City's attack, Tottenham has injected creativity into their offense. 

The ball movement has become smoother, allowing Son Heung-min's penetrating runs to shine. 

Maddison's ability to carry the ball, switch play, and contribute to the build-up has made Tottenham's attacking work more fluid.

 

Next is the defensive line. 

By placing Mickey van de Ven and Romero as the center-back duo, and Udogie and Porro on the flanks, Postecoglou has advanced Tottenham's defensive line. This advancement has laid the foundation for more exciting gameplay, allowing the midfield duo of Sarr and Bissouma to play to their strengths. Sarr and Bissouma are not players who excel in covering wide spaces or making expansive passes. They are adept at breaking through tight spaces and pressing forward defensively, making the advanced defensive line an ideal tactic for them.

The defensive line itself has also improved. 

The combination of Romero, proficient in advanced defending, and the quick Van de Ven, capable of covering behind, is ideal. 

Udogie and Porro's versatility in overlapping and inverted roles greatly benefits the team, given the importance of full-backs in modern football.

 

These changes and Postecoglou's tactical approach have led Tottenham to display much better performances than last season, with the improved league position being a bonus. However, if everything was perfect, Tottenham wouldn't be sitting in 5th place.

Whether it's due to the squad's limitations or the manager's capabilities, Tottenham still shows some weaknesses. The most notable shortcoming is Postecoglou's lack of a Plan B.

 

Throughout the season, Postecoglou has prepared similar game plans regardless of the opponent, resulting in similar starting lineups and positional roles. 

While consistent tactics can reduce players' confusion and provide a clear plan, the issue is that it's too repetitive.

This could be seen as a matter of results—if the same tactics work every time, there's no problem. 

People might say the same about Manchester City, for instance, 

"They play the same way every time, but they always win. Isn't it just a difference in player quality?" 

While player quality is a factor, Pep Guardiola changes the details of his game plan for each match, even if the overall strategy remains similar. 

In other words, it’s a matter of detail.

 

Postecoglou could be criticized for lacking flexibility and adaptability.

For example, mid-season, Tottenham's best defensive line couldn't be formed due to Van de Ven's injury, and Dragusin had to fill in.

While Dragusin is undoubtedly a good player, he is not similar to Van de Ven.

He isn't as fast and isn't left-footed.

 

In such a situation, I would have adjusted the defensive line slightly backward to reduce the risk of mistakes in the build-up phase and the immediate threat to the space behind.

Limiting the full-backs' advancement or increasing the midfield's defensive involvement could have been alternative measures.

 

However, Postecoglou didn't do that. He maintained the same game plan, merely replacing the player, leading to the disastrous 3-0 defeat to Fulham.

This also relates to in-game adjustments. 

Recalling the heavy defeat to Newcastle, Eddie Howe tailored his tactics specifically for Tottenham, using a five-man defense to mark Tottenham's front three and full-backs one-on-one during attacks.

 

As a result, Tottenham's offense couldn't develop properly and became frustrating. 

Ideally, to break through man-marking, players should switch positions to disrupt the defenders, 

or unmarked players should support to create ambiguity for the opposing defenders.

However, Tottenham didn't show much of that. 

They continued to attack in their usual formation, making it difficult to break free from the man-marking.

During this time, Newcastle thoroughly targeted Tottenham's defensive gaps. 

With Barnes and Gordon leading the charge and the speedy, decisive Isak finishing, even the fast Van de Ven and Romero struggled to handle the swift trio in such a wide space. 

It resulted in another disaster—a 4-0 defeat.

 

Subsequent matches showed similar patterns. 

In the Arsenal match, Tottenham was exposed to set-piece tactics, leading to defeat. 

 

Against Chelsea, despite Tottenham dominating, set-pieces again became the starting point of their downfall. 

 

In the match against Liverpool, the absence of their main left-back Udogie was not adequately addressed, leading to another loss. 

 

Consequently, they suffered four consecutive defeats.

 

Considering it's his first season, it's unlikely that Tottenham will consider sacking Postecoglou despite the recent poor form. 

As mentioned, although the current form isn't good, the performances in the early and mid-season were very promising.

However, they cannot continue like this next season. 

Now that Postecoglou's weaknesses have been exposed in the Premier League, it will be interesting to see how he prepares for the next season.
