Match 3: Real Madrid vs Manchester City

Winner: Real Madrid

 

 

As expected, it was Real Madrid's turn.

The revenge of Real Madrid overturning last year's defeat has been achieved.

The game's dynamics, in both the first and second legs, unfolded just as everyone had anticipated.

While Manchester City dominated possession and overwhelmed, Real Madrid focused on solid defense and swift counterattacks led by Vinicius, Bellingham, and Rodrygo.

The first-leg match at Real's home opened with Bernardo Silva of Manchester City scoring a stunning free-kick goal just two minutes into the first half. 

However, that lead was short-lived as City found themselves helpless against Real's trademark quick counterattacks, quickly flipping the scoreline to 2-1.

Comparing the attacking styles of Manchester City and Real Madrid is fascinating. 

While City meticulously builds up their attacks like stacking stones one by one, Real Madrid simply brings a few solid rocks and establishes a sturdy tower.

The quality of long passes between players was so exceptional due to their excellent fundamentals that long passes felt effortless.

 

Another notable matchup was between Rudiger and Halland. 

Frankly, Rudiger completely outplayed Halland. 

While Halland's main strengths lie in his superior physicality, strength in duels, and clinical finishing, Rudiger managed to prevent Halland from seizing opportunities and continuously maintained the upper hand in duels, essentially nullifying Holland's impact. 

Thanks to Rudiger's performance, Manchester City essentially played without a proper striker.

Fortunately, the performances of second-choice players were commendable. 

Particularly, Phil Foden, who has been in excellent form lately, scored the equalizing goal, showing his worth once again. 

Bernardo Silva, who scored in the second minute of the first leg, continued to trouble the opposition by constantly maneuvering between defenders.

The first leg saw a total of six goals, but neither team emerged victorious. 

Atmospherically, it seemed Real Madrid had the upper hand, but for Manchester City, it was a fortunate result.

 

The second leg at the Etihad Stadium didn't differ much in terms of dynamics.

However, this time, Real Madrid took the lead, and once again, a goal came from a counterattack, with Rodrygo being the protagonist. 

After conceding, Manchester City launched a relentless offensive. 

With overwhelming possession at home, they produced numerous shots on target, but this time, Real Madrid's outstanding goalkeeper, Lunin, made numerous incredible saves.

Considering that Manchester City's expected goals (xG) value was 2.74 but they only scored one goal, it's evident how well Lunin performed. 

Even the conceded goal was due to De Bruyne's exceptional second ball control; otherwise, Lunin stopped every other shot effectively.

 

The game went into extra time, and both teams gave it their all. 

Watching the match, one could feel how exhausted the players were. 

Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid reportedly ran 15 kilometers after the game, indicating just how grueling it was. 

Other full-time players likely covered similar distances. 

It was a truly grueling match.

Neither team managed to settle the game within regular time or extra time, and ultimately, the semifinalist was decided in a penalty shootout. 

This time, Real Madrid emerged as the winner.

Given that both teams poured their hearts out, whoever won wouldn't have been surprising, but as predicted from the beginning, it was Real Madrid.

Match 4: Paris Saint-Germain vs Barcelona

Winner: Paris Saint-Germain

 

 

Took 7 years, but the avenger remains the same.

Seven years ago, it was Paris and Barcelona, each securing victories at their home turf. 

This time, they reversed roles, clinching wins away from home. 

While Barcelona managed to overturn the outcome last time, this time it was Paris that turned the tables. 

And the man behind both turnarounds remains the same: manager Luis Enrique.

In the first leg at Paris' home ground, Barcelona's prodigy, Raphinha, displayed his exceptional goal-scoring prowess, putting his team ahead. 

Exploiting Paris' relatively unstable defense against their attacking lineup, Barcelona's sacred entity, along with Lamine Yamal, took control.

 

However, Paris had Dembele, who left Barcelona. 
Strangely enough, Dembele's play was exceptional, devoid of any flaws that were often present. 
His cool goal celebration without any flip flops added to the spectacle.
Barcelona fans watching the game must have been ecstatic.

 

Moreover, Barcelona manager Xavi's tactical maneuvers were spot on this day. 
When Raphinha who scored two goals and the midfield linchpin, Frenkie de Jong, were substituted out, I found myself doubting once again. 
But that was just my lack of understanding of Xavi's bigger plan. 
The substitution of Christensen, who created a decisive goal just two minutes after entering the field, secured a precious away win for Barcelona.

Considering Paris couldn't effectively utilize their home advantage, I wondered if the Champions League was simply not meant to be for them. 

 

But the second leg was still ahead.

 

Determined Paris seemed to besiege Barcelona from the beginning at Camp Nou, almost as if they had made up their minds. 
However, once again, Barcelona had Raphinha.

Putting another goal past Paris, Raphinha broke their momentum yet again, paving the smooth path for Barcelona's journey to the semi-finals. 
But that was until the biggest variable in this match appeared.

In less than 30 minutes, Paris relentlessly targeted Barcelona's defense, led by speedsters Barcola, Mbappe, and Dembele, in the front. Eventually, one clear opportunity arose. 
Barcola, dribbling swiftly, was fouled by Araujo, Barcelona's defensive pillar, resulting in a direct red card.

 

Barcelona was left with no choice but to deal with a clear disadvantage. 
The only center-back available to replace Araujo was Inigo, and Martinez. 
Christensen, the hero of the previous match, was ineligible due to accumulated yellow cards. 
Inigo and Cubarsi, despite their talents, were inexperienced in Champions League matches. 
Inigo, although an experienced player, lacked pace, 
while Cubarsi, despite his talent, was a young promising talent experiencing the Champions League for the first time.

What was even more disappointing was the substitution made by coach Xavi, who showed brilliant tactical acumen in the previous match. 
While bringing in Inigo was a reasonable choice, replacing him with Yamal was regrettable.

Given the need to sit back and counter, excluding Yamal, Barcelona's most optimized resource for counterattacks, was an incomprehensible decision.

 

From then on, the situation was predictable. With one less player, Barcelona was bound to struggle. 
Paris, already dominant in possession, intensified their pressure, and Dembele once again broke the deadlock.

If he had done that while at Barcelona... Barcelona fans found themselves once again in fear against this lad.

After equalizing away from home, Paris shifted to a half-court game from the second half. 
Barcelona wanted to defend and counter, but they fell short. 
Their defense succumbed to the opponent's speed, and their counterattacks fizzled out due to the lack of a spearhead.

To make matters worse, coach Xavi was sent off early in the second half.

 

After Vitiñha's fantastic goal that equalized the aggregate score, Xavi showed signs of uncontrolled emotions, leading to his direct dismissal.

Now, even the coach was sent off. Paris celebrated gleefully, knowing they had outplayed Barcelona.

A few minutes later, Mbappe successfully converted a penalty, flipping the aggregate score, and just before the end of the game, he sealed the deal with another goal, solidifying his status as the star of the match throughout Spain.

Along with the previous review, all four matches were games without clear favorites.

They provided a glimpse of world-class football, with intriguing stories unfolding in each one.

That's the taste of football I enjoy.
