Review of the 2023 2024 UEFA Champions League Quarter Final(1)

Match 1: Arsenal vs Bayern Munich

Winner: Bayern Munich

 

I could have anticipated it, but I didn't expect it.

No matter how weakened the lion becomes, does it never fall prey to the hare? 

Given recent form in the league, honestly, many would probably agree that Arsenal being the underdog was quite likely. 

The gap seemed substantial.

While Arsenal had been on a winning streak, Bayern Munich's recent form was the worst, with a home defeat against Deaerclasicer and losses to even bottom-tier teams in the league.

However, what turned everything around is, well, hard to explain. The so-called Champions League DNA?

A game unfolded that could only be described by the cunning of the coach, the experience of the players, and the resilience of the team.

 

The nature of the game at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg wasn't significantly different from what was expected. 

Despite Arsenal dictating the game, as recent performances and form showed, that was all they did. 

They held possession but failed to create proper chances or capitalize on the few they got. 

 

If one were to ask whether it was poor player form or bad tactics, that wouldn't be the case. 

They dominated the game as per their plan and created several chances.

If anything, what lacked was finishing.

 

In contrast, Bayern Munich was somewhat unexpected. 

Despite the recent slump, objectively, Bayern, a top dog anywhere in Europe, seemed to have underestimated the game this time. 

One could even argue that Bayern sitting back, unlike their usual self, actually frustrated Arsenal more. 

They sat back well, especially deploying Gnabry almost as a full-back to block Arsenal's right-wing, their attacking outlet.

And Bayern effortlessly exploited Arsenal's defense with early counter-attacks.

Despite the defensive line sitting deep, the threat from the pacey wingers, Sane and Gnabry, on both flanks was too menacing for Arsenal.

 

I hadn't really anticipated Tuchel making such a decision.

Given the situation even in the league, where he hadn't been consistently making tactically correct choices, I had momentarily forgotten that Tuchel is an astute tactician.

So, Bayern, who managed to draw at the Emirates (to be honest, they almost won), completely transformed their game at home.

Now, against a desperate Arsenal, Bayern thoroughly exploited their position as top dogs.

Playing at their own ground, they maintained possession slowly, making Arsenal, in a hurry, exhaust themselves by rushing in.

They abandoned the sight of sitting back and giving up possession from the first leg and controlled the game.

Arsenal only continued to be frustrated.

Both the coach and the players couldn't overcome the difference in experience and expertise.

Arteta conceded defeat tactically to Tuchel, and the players were overwhelmed by Bayern players who had been through numerous battles.

 

Ultimately, it was Kimmich who marked the attack of Bayern, who kept targeting Arsenal's weaknesses.

Not only does he have experience winning the Champions League and the treble, but he was also at the heart of it.

Arsenal didn't really do anything even after conceding.

Blocked within Bayern's penalty box, they were left helpless, and once again, they failed to catch Bayern in the Champions League, despite seeming like they could this time.

Match 2: Atletico Madrid vs Dortmund

Winner: Dortmund

 

 

Signal Iduna Park is formidable.

A match that might have seemed worth trying for each other was, in fact, perhaps the least recognized match among the Champions League quarter-finals in Korea.

But it was surprisingly enjoyable.

The first-leg match unfolded at the Metropolitano, a trademark game for Atletico Madrid.

It was a game where even when a team had possession, they couldn't do much with it. The pressure intensified even more thanks to Rodrigo de Paul's goal just four minutes into the first half.

Dortmund was clearly holding possession and trying to do something, but it felt more like they were being dragged around rather than dictating the game.

 

And then there's Griezmann in Atletico.

Despite not receiving as much attention as he should this season, Griezmann is orchestrating the team's attack while showing peak form.

Given Atletico's tactical nature where speed in counter-attacks is crucial, Griezmann's presence, maintaining that speed while adding precision, was felt enormously at the Metropolitano.

 

Of course, Dortmund didn't just sit back and take it, and they managed to score a goal late in the game, giving them some hope for the second leg.

And the second leg was even more exciting.

At the Signal Iduna Park, with an overwhelming capacity of 80,000 spectators, Dortmund showed a different side from the first leg.

Boosted by the cheers of home fans, they lowered their possession slightly but pushed for attacks quickly and forcefully.

And it paid off.

With Brandt scoring early, Dortmund equalized the aggregate score and gained momentum.

Especially noteworthy was Sabitzer's performance.

He was involved in Dortmund's build-up play from the midfield area to the opponent's box.

Effective box penetrations were most threatening to Madrid, where the most challenged aspect was Axel Witsel who is not specialized as a center-back.

 

Already struggling to contain Dortmund's speedy winger, Adeyemi, Madrid found themselves overwhelmed when Sabitzer also joined the fray.

And with wing-back Maatsen also actively joining the attack, it resulted in a goal.

Personally, I wonder if substituting Witsel quickly would have been better, but if there weren't appropriate replacement options, there's nothing much to say.

Madrid, unlike the first leg, seemed insecure in defense, unable to mount a proper attack.

Though they briefly took the lead in the aggregate score in the middle of the second half, it was short-lived.

Following Fullkrug's goal, Sabitzer, who had been showing a good performance since the first half, created a goal himself, overturning the aggregate score, and Dortmund succeeded in securing a spot in the Champions League semi-finals at the Signal Iduna Park.

Both the first and second legs saw Bundesliga teams securing their spot in the semi-finals, completely turning my expectations upside down...

If I were to make excuses, considering their recent form, one might argue that underdogs prevailed. 

However, both matches were hard-fought battles where each team managed to overcome their disadvantages somehow and pull through.
